D.N.A. spiral helix

For years I have heated my house with firewood. Every time I saw an interesting knot or burl I would cut it out in a wedge shape with the chainsaw. Eventually I had many wedges of varying sizes that conspired to come together in this form inspired by the structure of the Double Helix.
The base is concrete, sandblasted to reveal the shattered windshield glass added to the aggregate.
The piece is 1'wide, and 5' tall.

Cedar post Revealed

This and it's sister piece "Infrastructure" were both taken from the same trunk of Red Cedar. This series is a study of the hard and softwood components of trees. By scrapping and sanding away the softer, lighter colored wood one reveals the viened headgrain so valued by craftsmen from luthiers to shipwrights to furniture makers.

A Tribute to Firewood

I love everything about a fireplace. From getting out in nature with a chainsaw and a pickup, to free heat that is both beautiful and therapeutic. I liked these particular "splits", and framed them with used chainsaw blades, bordered by bars. This is a two sided piece that would be best displayed with the back side of the piece viewable. The base is concrete, with shattered windshield glassadded to the aggregate.32"*4'.

These were the master lock for the death row cell block of the old Virginia state penitentiary. When it was demolished the woman in the construction trailer allowed me to go down into the rubble pile and extract this control locking panel. We cut out the panel with blow torches. The bars were placed face down in a sand mold. I protruded my fingers and hands into the sand, through the bars so when they were filled with molten aluminum it appeared as though hands were attempting to escape.

I built my own furnace to produce these pieces. The aluminum stock came from power service cables at the junkyard. This process is most rewarding, and I'm presently building another furnace that will enable me to cast larger pieces.
